Because I live in Seville I’ve had the opportunity to visit the Real Alcázar many times. I’ve experienced both the delight of exploring its beauty pretty much in solitude as well as the frustration of navigating through dense crowds.

I totally get it. If you’re only in the city for a short time, you probably won’t have the luxury of choosing the quietest moments like I can. But don’t worry—with some careful planning, you can still avoid the worst of the crowds.

Best Time to Visit the Royal Alcazar of Seville

The Royal Alcazar, (or Real Alcázar in Spanish) is the most popular attraction in Seville. It gets insanely busy.

If you want to avoid the crowds for your Alcázar visit then my top suggestion is to secure one of the exclusive pre-opening hours entry. 

This gives you 90 minutes inside the Alcazar before the main gate opens to the public – only a small handful of these tickets are available each day.

If that’s not an option, the next best option is to visit early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s typically quieter. 

The seasons also matter— I’ll dive into this in more depth later. 

Due to the extreme heat, July and August are Seville’s low season – the city is like a ghost town. If you’re not bothered by inferno-like temperatures, then this is certainly the quietest time of year to visit. 

What Time Does the Alcazar Open

The Royal Alcázar has different opening hours depending on the time of year. 

• From October 29 to March 31, it’s open daily from 9:30 am to 6 pm (last entry at 5 pm)
• From April 1 to October 28, the hours extend until 8 pm (last entry at 7 pm. 
• The Alcázar is closed on the 1st and 6th of January, Good Friday, and the 25th of December.

Does Alcazar Seville Have Evening Hours?

Yes!

If you’re planning an Alcázar Seville night visit, here’s what you need to know:

• Available March to October: Night tours are not available in November, December, January, or February.
• Tour times:
  • In March and October: tours start at 7:30 pm, 8:00 pm, 8:30 pm, and 9:00 pm.
  • From April to September: tours start at 9:00 pm, 9:30 pm, 10:00 pm, and 10:30 pm.
• Tour days: Fridays and Saturdays, with each tour lasting 75 minutes.
• Ticket availability: Maximum of 45 people per tour, leaving every 30 minutes.
• No tours on Good Friday, 24th, 25th, 31st December, and 1st, 5th, 6th January.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Alcazar of Seville

If you want to avoid the crowds entirely, the best way to visit the Seville Alcázar is through the exclusive pre-entry tour. Only one company is licensed to offer this tour, and tickets are limited, with groups capped at 20 people.

Best Time of Day to Visit Real Alcazar Seville

The best option for enjoying the Alcazar without the crowds is on the Alone in the Alcázar tour, where you have exclusive access to the palace before it opens to the public. 

If you don’t want to do that then your next best bet is to arrive early. 

Although the doors open at 9:30 am, people start queuing about 40 minutes beforehand to be the first through the gates and to see the palace without the crowds. 

Alternatively, consider visiting later in the afternoon, after the crowds from cruise ships and coaches have cleared out, making it a more relaxed experience.

Weekday vs Weekend

If you can, try to visit the Real Alcázar on a weekday. 

Weekends tend to be busier because local residents of Seville get free access so will opt to visit when they’re not working. 

For tourists, it doesn’t make a huge difference since you can visit any time, but choosing a weekday will give you a better chance of avoiding the extra crowds.

By Season

The Alcazar is popular all year round. There’s also a packed calendar of events throughout the year including summer concerts, dramatised reenactments, and augmented light shows.

Spring

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit the Real Alcázar, with the gardens in full bloom. However, it’s also the busiest season, especially in April, when Seville hosts Semana Santa and Feria de Abril. The city is packed, and tickets to the Alcázar sell out fast. If possible, avoid visiting in April.

Summer

Summer, especially August, is one of the quietest times to visit the Alcázar because Seville is an inferno so locals escape and tourists avoid visiting – the city feels like a ghost town at times. If you’re okay with the heat, it can be a great time to visit without the usual crowds.

Autumn

September and October are popular times to visit, as the temperatures are more bearable compared to summer. However, these months are also the second busiest season for tourists so expect to see crowds.

Winter

Winter is generally quieter, but keep in mind that the city gets busier around Christmas until mid-January. If you’re visiting Seville in January, the decorations will have gone, but you’ll still find the Naturaleza Encendida in the evenings at the Alcazar – it usually runs from November to about March.

Is Alcazar Seville Open on Public Holidays?

There are various national and regional holidays throughout the year in Seville. The Alcazar is open on these.

On these days, expect bigger crowds than normal. Make sure you book your entry well in advance.

The only days the Alcázar is closed are the following:

• 1st and 6th of January
• Good Friday
• 25th of December

How Long Should I Spend at Alcazar Seville?

If you’re wondering how long to visit Alcázar Seville, I’d suggest setting aside at least 2 or 3 hours. 

This gives you enough time to explore all the key areas, take photos, and relax in the beautiful gardens. 

The Alcázar is filled with intricate details, and you’ll want time to really take it all in. Plus, there’s no rush! Once you’re inside, your ticket doesn’t have a time limit, so you can stay as long as you like.

If you’re someone who enjoys wandering and soaking up the atmosphere, you could easily spend even more time there.

The last Alcazar of Seville entrance time for the general visit is one hour before it closes.

• From October 29 to March 31, the last entry is at 5 pm
• From April 1 to October 28, the last entry is at 7 pm

Should You Buy Alcazar Tickets in Advance?

Yes! 

I definitely recommend buying your Alcázar of Seville tickets in advance, even during the quieter months.

The Real Alcázar is Seville’s most popular attraction, and booking ahead ensures you get the best time slot for your visit. 

Plus, by booking your tickets in advance you can also skip the ticket office lines. I wouldn’t chance buying tickets when you’re already in the city, even though there are a few ways to get Alcazar tickets if they’ve sold out, it’s not worth the stress.

What to Do if There Are No Tickets Available?

If you haven’t booked tickets in advance, there’s a good chance they might be sold out, especially during peak season. 

But don’t worry! 

If the official box office is sold out, you might still have a chance of getting hold of a ticket on the same day through a third-party vendor.
