Seville Cathedral Dress Code: What to Wear on Your Visit
Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, drawing millions of visitors each year. If you’re planning a visit, here’s exactly what the Seville Cathedral dress code requires, and what you can expect when you arrive.
I visited recently and, honestly, the feedback from staff was a bit mixed.
The rules on my ticket, the website, and at the entrance all clearly outlined what to wear to Seville Cathedral, but in practice, it didn’t seem equally enforced by every member of staff.
That said, I still wouldn’t want to be that tourist who shows up dressed inappropriately.
Here’s my honest guide to what’s expected, what usually seems fine in practice, and what I’d wear to avoid any issues at the door.

Does Seville Cathedral Have a Dress Code?
Yes, Seville Cathedral does have a dress code, and visitors are usually better off dressing a little more conservatively rather than testing how relaxed the staff will be that day.
On my last visit, the person at the entrance scanning tickets was noticeably stricter than anyone I met inside.
That said, it’s still a place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the same basic respect applies as it would in any mosque, temple, or church.
The dress code for Seville Cathedral is pretty straightforward: cover your shoulders, wear skirts, dresses, shorts, or trousers that reach at least around the knee, and avoid beach-style footwear.
When I visited, I was wearing linen trousers and a strappy top. I had a lightweight scarf in my bag to throw over my shoulders, which was fine. I also noticed staff handing out small scarves to women inside who hadn’t come prepared.

Good To Know
If you’re visiting Seville in the peak of summer, you’ll actually find the space nice and cool. If you visit in the morning, it actually feels quite cool inside, so a cover-up is actually handy to have.

How Strict Is the Seville Cathedral Dress Code in Practice?
Officially, the rules are clear, but actual enforcement seems to vary a little. On my visit, the person scanning tickets was stricter than anyone I saw inside.
That’s why I’d treat the official dress code as the standard, even if you hear stories of people getting in dressed more casually.
If you’re unsure, a lightweight scarf or cover-up is the easiest fix and takes up almost no room in your bag.
What Do the Official Rules State?
Below is a statement taken from the official Seville Cathedral website about its clothing rules.
Note: The original statement has been translated via Google Translate
June 21, 2019 The Cabildo recalls that:
“To preserve respect for the sacred character of the temple, we remind you that in the summer months, it will be essential to comply with the standards of decorum in the dress.
The proper aesthetics in clothing favours coexistence, cordiality and respect for the special sensitivity of the visit to a cathedral.
For everything, we ask visitors to think when they enter and refrain from wearing beach shoes. The ladies will not be able to access with strapped T-shirts and mini shorts and men in sleeveless T-shirts. Thank you.”
In short, that means no exposed shoulders, no very short shorts or skirts, no sleeveless tops for men, and no flip-flops or beach-style shoes.
If you book your tickets through the Seville Cathedral website, you’ll also see this image of appropriate clothing before you go to the checkout.
The dress code is also printed on the ticket, and you’ll see the same sign at the main entrance to the Cathedral.

Seville Cathedral Clothing Rules for Visitors
Here’s what to wear if you’re planning to visit the cathedral.
As a general rule, smart casual is appropriate. Think of it less as a strict uniform and more as a baseline of respect.
However, it doesn’t seem to be wildly enforced, or it wasn’t on my visit.
If it’s your first time visiting, these are the easiest outfit options that won’t cause any stress at the entrance:
- Linen trousers and a sleeved top
- A midi dress with a light scarf for shoulder coverage
- Chino-style shorts that reach the knee with a polo or T-shirt
- A long skirt and a simple top that covers the shoulders
- Trainers or smart sandals rather than flip-flops
Seville Cathedral Dress Code for Men
- Tops: T-shirts, shirts, or polo shirts are all fine. Avoid sleeveless tops and vests.
- Bottoms: Trousers, chinos, or smart shorts that fall at or below the knee. Swimwear-style shorts are not allowed.
- Footwear: Clean trainers, loafers, or smart sandals are safest. Avoid flip-flops and obvious beach sandals.
Can Men Wear Shorts in Seville Cathedral?
Yes, you can wear shorts in Seville Cathedral, but they should be smart, not beachwear, and ideally reach around the knee.
On my visit, I saw men in knee-length shorts and regular tops enter without any issue.
If you’re deciding between two options, chino-style shorts are a much safer choice than anything very casual, sporty, or cut-off.
Seville Cathedral Dress Code for Women
- Tops: T-shirts or shirts that cover your shoulders. If you’re wearing a strappy or strapless top, bring a lightweight scarf. On my visit, exposed shoulders seemed to draw more attention than almost anything else, so this is the rule I’d take most seriously.
- Bottoms and skirts: Aim for a length that hits the knee or below. A practical test: if you’d wear it to a formal workplace, it’s probably fine here.
- Dresses: Fine to wear, as long as they cover the shoulders and aren’t very short.
- Footwear: Flat shoes, low heels, or trainers. Avoid flip-flops and beach sandals.

Planning your day around the cathedral?
Most visitors combine the Cathedral with an early visit to the Real Alcázar next door.
What Not to Wear to Seville Cathedral
If you want to play it safe, these are the items I’d avoid wearing to Seville Cathedral, even if enforcement seems mixed on the day.
- Hats or caps (except headwear worn for religious reasons)
- Flip-flops or beach shoes
- Tank tops or vests
- Strapless tops or dresses
- Very short shorts or hot pants
- Mini skirts or very short skirts
- Swimwear
- Sleeveless tops or dresses
If I had to narrow it down to the three biggest risk items, I’d say very short shorts, uncovered shoulders, and flip-flops.
What Shoes Can You Wear to Seville Cathedral?
The safest options are trainers, loafers, or smart sandals with a proper sole and strap. Flip-flops and beach sandals are the main styles to avoid.
If you’re spending the whole day walking around Seville, supportive sandals or comfortable trainers are usually the easiest choice.

What To Wear To Seville Cathedral FAQs
Is There a Dress Code for Cathedrals in Spain?
Yes. Most cathedrals in Spain have a dress code. The general rule across the country is to cover your shoulders and wear clothing that reaches the knee. Sleeveless tops, miniskirts, and shorts that are very short are usually not allowed.
Does Seville Itself Have a Dress Code?
No. In Seville, generally, people can wear what they like. However, the Sevillanos do tend to dress well and take pride in their appearance, but there’s no rule about it. The cathedral is the exception, not the norm.
What Dresses Can Women Wear Inside Seville Cathedral?
A dress should cover your shoulders and reach below the knee. Sleeveless, strapless, or very short dresses are considered disrespectful. If your dress is sleeveless, a light scarf over the shoulders is a simple solution.
What Can I Wear to Seville Cathedral?
For both men and women, the key things to remember are: cover your shoulders and make sure your clothing reaches the knee. Trousers, longer skirts, and smart dresses are all good options. Avoid tank tops, flip-flops, and very short shorts. In summer, a light scarf in your bag is genuinely useful.
Can You Wear Jeans to Seville Cathedral?
Yes. Jeans are fine, as long as they look reasonably smart. Very ripped or heavily distressed jeans might attract attention, but standard jeans are no problem.
Can You Wear Shorts in Seville Cathedral?
Yes, you can wear shorts to Seville Cathedral, but length matters. Very short or swimwear-style shorts are not allowed. Aim for shorts that fall at around knee height and look reasonably smart, and you should have no issue getting in.
Can You Wear Sandals to Seville Cathedral?
It depends on the type. Flip-flops and beach sandals are specifically mentioned as not allowed in the official rules. Smart sandals with a proper sole and strap are usually fine in practice, but I wouldn’t risk anything that looks too casual or poolside. If in doubt, wear trainers.

Before You Visit Seville Cathedral
The Seville Cathedral dress code is not especially complicated, but it is worth getting right.
Cover your shoulders, avoid very short bottoms, and skip flip-flops or beachwear, and you should be absolutely fine.
If you’re visiting in summer, a lightweight scarf is the easiest thing to keep in your bag. It solves the most common issue at the door and is useful inside too, since the cathedral can feel surprisingly cool.
